Plenty of signs indicate that your current pool cover needs an update, but here’s one you can’t miss: ripping or tearing from last fall. Snow, leaves and other debris will inevitably land on your pool cover, so if it’s already started to rip and tear, this means that the cover wasn’t the best pick, and it won’t do you any favors this season.
So how do you select the right pool cover without wasting money? You don’t necessarily need to buy the most expensive cover on the market, but buying something too cheap may not get you through the season. Below are some helpful tips for helping you make the right decision. (Please note that this is general information regarding pool covers. There may be differences between aboveground and inground pools depending on your needs.)
Pool Size: At the very least, the cover needs to accommodate the size of your pool. If you don’t know the measurements, measure the diameter or length and width of the area. Inground pools should be measured from the inside walls.
Thickness: Thicker may sound better, but thick covers are harder to handle. Choose a premium material that is lightweight and easy to manage. Economy covers are usually the thickest and heaviest.
Overlap: Economy covers come with limited overlap, whereas premium covers provide a greater overlap. This gives the cover easier handling, mounting and securing.
Grommets: Aboveground pool covers typically include grommets that are used for mounting. Look for grommets that are rust-resistant and have extra stitching for securing the cover. Economy covers may not include grommets, or the grommets will be thin and vulnerable to ripping in the wind.
Weave: A cover that is tightly woven won’t let as much sun, water and debris into the pool. A mesh weave is also a suitable choice if you don’t mind water getting in but want to keep large pieces of debris out. Solid covers are nice, but they do build up water. That said, they are the most effective at blocking out the sun and excess water.
Colors and Coatings: For preventing algae growth, choose a cover with a dark underside that prevents light from getting through. Some premium models even have special coatings that discourage algae. Economy covers are usually available in numerous colors and without special coatings.
Weather: A final thing to keep in consideration is where you live. If your area sees cold and windy winters, you’ll need a sturdy cover with metal grommets that will keep the cover in place. On the other hand, dirt or sand from dry winter storms may be the type of damage that your area sees, therefore crossing mesh covers off the list.
